La Guerre des fils de lumière contre les fils des ténèbres
A recording of a new version of the stage production based on The Jewish War by ancient historian Flavius Josephus performed at the opening of the 2009 Avignon Film Festival. Josephus’ text recounts the loss of Jewish sovereignty in Palestine after the war against the Romans, the taking of Jerusalem, the destruction of the Temple, and the fall of Masada. Staged at Boulbon quarry, Jeanne Moreau plays the role of the historian. The piece presents a lyrical and political reflection on the Middle East today.

Music, sounds, the tone of voices… Boulbon quarry is the main character in this journey to the past that leads back to the present… Amos Gitai’s intent was not to create a “theatrical” show… Here, we’re in the world of narration with quick spurts of action. The action lies in the spoken word. The chronicle by Flavius Josephus is so vivid and holds such narrative and illustrative power that any attempt to act it out would be fruitless and below par with the story itself.
