Roses à crédit

Marjoline, a pretty adolescent, comes to Paris at the end of World War II. She becomes a manicurist at a beauty salon and marries Daniel, a horticulturalist. As a wedding gift, they receive an apartment with modern amenities. Marjoline has never been happier. Against her husband’s wishes, she goes in debt in order to furnish it. Her obsessive desire soon becomes a threat to their happiness. Based on the novel by Elsa Triolet.

PRESS

The film mercilessly yet sensitively dissects the materialist, post-war world of the French middle-class… Gitai skillfully follows the emotional twists and turns of this unhappy marriage, as debt and credit begin to overwhelm the couple’s early romanticism. The reconstruction movement of the 1950s sets the tone of everyday life, as well as the ebb and flow of the relationship.
